Further progression of retraction pockets can cause destruction of the eardrum. The blue arrow shows the cholesteatoma pocket within the middle ear. This attic refers to the pars flaccida region of the eardrum which is far less tense and more flaccid hence the name than the pars tensa which is the remainder of the eardrum.
